Latest Updates on the TOEFL 2026 Exam
The TOEFL iBT has undergone its most significant changes in years starting January 21, 2026. If you’re planning to take the TOEFL in 2026, staying updated on the new format, test structure, scoring system, and key differences from the previous version is essential.
1. What Is TOEFL? What Is It Used For?
TOEFL - short for Test of English as a Foreign Language - is an academic English proficiency test developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), a nonprofit organization based in the United States. It is one of the most widely recognized English tests worldwide, with over 40 million test-takers since its launch.
TOEFL evaluates your ability to understand and use English in academic and professional settings across four skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The test is fully computer-based (TOEFL iBT) and can be taken at a test center or at home (TOEFL Home Edition).
What is TOEFL used for?
- Study abroad (undergraduate & postgraduate): This is the most common purpose. Most universities in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries require TOEFL scores as proof of English proficiency for admission.
- International scholarships: Prestigious programs such as Fulbright, Chevening, AAS, and MEXT require TOEFL scores as part of the application.
- Job applications at international companies: Many multinational corporations and global organizations accept TOEFL as proof of English ability.
- Immigration and residency: Some countries and immigration programs accept TOEFL scores (often alongside other requirements).
- Personal English proficiency validation: A reliable, objective way to assess your English level for career growth or self-evaluation.
Note: TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. After that, ETS will no longer report them to institutions.
2. Who Can Take the TOEFL?
There are no strict requirements regarding age, nationality, or education level. In theory, anyone who is not a native English speaker can register.
However, TOEFL is most suitable for:
- Students preparing to study abroad
Typically from Grade 11–12 onwards, when they have sufficient English foundation to reach university requirements. - Working professionals seeking career growth or job changes
Especially those targeting multinational companies, NGOs, or graduate studies abroad. - Individuals planning to live or work overseas
Some immigration or work visa programs may require or prioritize TOEFL scores.
